Gently clean with a soft, lint-free cloth after each wear to remove oils and dirt. For deeper cleaning, use warm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.

Avoid Damage

Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, or exercising. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals, perfumes, lotions, and hairspray. Put jewelry on last when getting ready.

Understanding Tarnish

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air and moisture. This is a normal process and doesn't damage the metal: it's simply a surface reaction with sulfur in the air.

How to Remove Tarnish

Method 1: Polishing Cloth

The easiest method. Use a silver polishing cloth designed for jewelry. Gently rub the tarnished areas in back-and-forth motions (not circular). The cloth contains special compounds that remove tarnish without scratching.

Method 2: Silver Dip

For heavily tarnished pieces, use a silver cleaning solution. Follow the product instructions carefully, rinse thoroughly with water, and dry completely with a soft cloth.

Method 3: Baking Soda Bath

Line a bowl with aluminum foil, add hot water, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 1 tablespoon of salt. Place your jewelry in the solution for 2-5 minutes. The tarnish will transfer to the foil. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.

What to Avoid

  • Never use toothpaste, baking soda paste, or abrasive cleaners: they can scratch the surface
  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners unless specifically designed for delicate jewelry
  • Don't wear silver in chlorinated pools or hot tubs: chlorine can damage the metal
  • Avoid exposing jewelry to direct sunlight for extended periods when storing

Prevention Tips

The best way to prevent tarnish is to wear your silver often; the oils from your skin help keep it bright. When you do take a piece off:

  • Wipe with a soft cloth before storing
  • Keep in a sealed bag or anti-tarnish pouch
  • Add a piece of chalk or anti-tarnish strip to your jewelry box
  • Store in a cool, dry environment away from humidity
