Essential Care Tips

Proper Storage

Store dry and separate from other jewelry, ideally in a soft pouch away from air and moisture.

Regular Cleaning

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear. Skip abrasive polishing cloths and cleaners: they wear through the thin gold layer.

Avoid Damage

Remove before showering, swimming, or exercising, and keep pieces away from sweat, perfume, lotion, and hairspray.

Understanding Layered Gold

Gold-filled, vermeil, and plated pieces carry a thin layer of gold bonded or plated over a base metal. That layer is durable but finite, so the goal is to slow its wear, not to polish it away.

How to Clean

Soft Cloth, No Abrasives

Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove oils and residue. Do not use silver polishing cloths, dips, or abrasive cleaners: their compounds are made to strip tarnish and will strip the thin gold layer along with it.

What to Avoid

  • Never use an abrasive polishing cloth or dip made for solid silver or gold: it wears the gold layer through
  • Avoid prolonged contact with sweat, perfume, lotion, and hairspray: they accelerate wear on the surface layer
  • Don't shower, swim, or exercise while wearing gold-filled or plated pieces
  • Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners entirely: they're too harsh for a plated surface

Prevention Tips

  • Store dry, separate, and away from other jewelry
  • Put jewelry on last when getting ready, and take it off first when undressing
  • Wipe with a soft cloth after each wear before storing

Some eventual thinning of the gold layer is normal for layered pieces, even with careful use. When it shows through, that's the base metal, not a fault in the piece.
